Turn artwork into a business

Learn how to plan a merchandise business, understand artwork licenses, and explore creator earnings. These are educational guides, not legal or financial advice. CustomDesignTee ordering and commercial licensing remain unavailable pending verification.

Start a print-on-demand merchandise business

  1. Choose a customer niche and a clear product promise.
  2. Create or license artwork, documenting where your rights come from.
  3. Check the actual garment SKU, printable area, resolution, shipping cost and provider proof before accepting orders.
  4. Calculate contribution margin after production, shipping, marketplace fees, royalties, taxes and expected refunds.
  5. Order a physical sample and confirm its appearance before selling.
  6. Set up customer support, returns, tax and business compliance appropriate to your location.

Understand artwork licensing and royalties

  1. A physical shirt purchase does not automatically include the underlying digital artwork rights.
  2. A nonexclusive license permits specified uses; an exclusive license requires verified rights and a clear written agreement.
  3. A royalty may be calculated from defined net sales, with explicit refund, discount and reporting rules.
  4. A fixed-fee license may have limits on products, copies, territory and duration.
  5. CustomDesignTee creator commissions and external commercial licensing are planned, not currently offered.
Copyright Office FAQs ↗

Copyright, trademark or design patent?

  1. Copyright can protect qualifying original human-authored expression; purely AI-generated output may not qualify.
  2. Trademark protects signs identifying the source of goods or services, not a general monopoly on artwork.
  3. A design patent can protect eligible ornamental designs for articles of manufacture, subject to patent law requirements.
  4. Keep dated source files and written licenses, but remember a timestamp alone does not prove exclusive ownership.
  5. Use a qualified intellectual-property professional for registration and ownership decisions.

How creator earnings could work

  1. Create or upload artwork and retain evidence of your rights.
  2. Choose whether to keep a design private or submit it for marketplace review.
  3. Choose an eligible licensing model: per-sale commission, one-time license, or a bundle.
  4. A future dashboard would track licensed uses, deductions and payments.
  5. No creator licensing purchases, payouts or guaranteed exclusivity are active today.
